With over 30 years of experience as an artist/maker, I create unique and uncommon designs including wall art, drawings, paintings, furniture and a myriad of accent items. Old world and new techniques are implemented to create stunning customized pieces. Good art that makes you smile. Great creativeness which evokes emotions that exceed your expectations.
As Hippocrates said, "The life so short, and the craft so long to learn." Often times my hand painted furniture can take hundreds of woman hours to decorate as there is no short cut with quality and execution. Same goes for my black and white abstract patterned drawings. Embellished items take much thought and planning, and once a composition for a painting or the theme of a particular item is decided, it rarely looks the same from inception to completion as the ideas evolve and hiccups or glitches arise with the techniques being used. I am always learning from my accidents and discover new effects and processes from living and doing. The enjoyment gained by producing art inspired by my many interests depends on my mood at the time and what supplies I have on hand. Having a sense of humor and swearing out loud help!
Rewiring my life as a 60-something artist/Entrepeneur is scary exciting. Working for over 3 decades as an operations manager at various corporate entities never really ignited my creative spark; was actually the least creative portion of my adult life, putting wear and tear on my body and eating away at my soul. Now that I am adulting on my own terms, the possibilities and promise of pursuing my potential are energizing my dreams of supporting myself as a maker/artist/creator. Many mature beings retire and slow down to a graceful pace, leaving labor behind to embrace hobbies, afternoon naps and projects with less pressure and more leisure time.
There are those of us Baby Boomers who continue to work, adapt and carry on the best we can. We rely on our wits and wisdom and use our knowledge to empower ourselves and make a new way. Staying active at my age is both a blessing and a challenge. My mind is occupied with all the ideas yet to materialize to nurture and sustain me and my spirit. I do not take myself too seriously, although I strive for the purpose and meaning in doing what I love. There are many facets to who I am and at this point, I am just getting started...
When self-determination and faith in what is to come are intertwined, these factors characterize Corrine. As a native Western New Yorker, Corrine was raised in the southern tier of the metropolitan Buffalo area as the oldest of 4 siblings and grew up learning the ropes in a family-owned business of Art and Antiques Dealers. “My personal style and sense of design and artistic sensibility come from being immersed in such an eclectic environment. Being surrounded by the rare, beautiful collectibles and curiosities adorning our Antique shop and Auction Gallery influence me to this day. I gained appreciation for period styles, ornamentation, and design across all manner of decorative arts. Patterns, color, and form are my jam. I derive excitement from starting my own business and creating thought provoking designs of my own for the world to acquire and enjoy.
My folks lived life and made their way on their terms, so it is a natural transition for me to run my own business now. It is never too late in life to pursue your dreams.”
Favorite memories of Corrine’s helping with the family endeavors were learning to merchandise their shop windows and arrange displays of fine art for auction. These skills lent themselves well to hanging her own art for exhibits. “We curated a sale of African artifacts which included tribal masks, textiles, statuary, and many marvelous carvings and wall hangings. Some of the pieces were purchased to join collections at the Sackler Gallery at Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. It was fate that many years later I was to become a graduate student at the Smithsonian to do coursework in the History of American Decorative Arts. Life comes full circle with our passions.”
Other highlights of Corrine’s early artsy experiences included her parents’ purchase of cut crystal goblets owned by Napoleon and Josephine. ” I recall their jewel-like colors and tall, graceful stems. Gorgeous.” Corrine dusted fine furniture and paid attention to the composition of wall art while studying their form.
Fast forward to today. Corrine Kay cares deeply about becoming a known entity in the arena of fine art and craft. Her goal is to teach and be taught; to market herself and her creations and to have her art and decor goods be among the most sought-after designs anywhere.
